Hi all,

I am revisiting a friend's tree again.  I am still on the look out for the Irish roots of Patrick Loughrey (or various) and his wife Sarah.  I have no details of Patrick at all; Sarah was born in Ireland around 1798 and died in Whitehaven in 1853, aged 55.

This is the family on the early census records:

1841 - New Houses, Front Row, St Bees, Whitehaven

Sarah Loughrey, 40, Ireland
Daniel Loughrey, 23, Carpenter, Ireland
Patrick Loughrey, 18, Coal Miner, Yes
Mary Loughrey, 16, Yes
Charles Loughrey, 14, Yes
John Loughrey, 10, Yes

HO107/158 F29 P2

1851 - 4 Front Row, Preston Quarter, Whitehaven
Sarah Lockery, Head, W, 52, Coal Miner's Widow formerly housekeeper Ireland
Patrick Lockery, Son, Un, 28, Coal Miner, Whitehaven
Mary Lockery, Daughter, Un, 25, Nurse, Whitehaven
John Lockery, Son, Un, 20, Coal Miner, Whitehaven

HO107/2437 F175 P1

Sons Daniel and Charles both died in 1848 in a mining explosion.

I'm interested in finding out more about father Patrick and mother Sarah.  If anyone possibly has information about where they came from in Ireland, that would be fantastic.

Many thanks,
Emma

I can't find anything about Patrick. There is a birth of a Daniel in 1818 with a mother called Sarah, but his father was James.

Daniel baptised on 26 Feb 1818 in Armagh, son of James Loughry and Sarah Treanor.

Thank you David, for taking the time to look. Perhaps Patrick never was the father. Will have a look later and see if James ties in. It is a name that features more recently - John named a son James.

There was no burial of any Loughery/Lockery/Lochery/Lockray family at St Bees between 1831 and 1851 - chances are they could all be buried in Whitehaven Cemetery, Low Road. Whitehaven.

Thanks Sandra.
I'm working completely outside of my comfort zone - Irish roots and I have no knowledge of Whitehaven either, so it's useful to have some local knowledge!

The 1851 shows the family at Front Row Preston Quarter Whitehaven.  266 houses were built in three rows, known as Front Row, Middle Row and Back Row with the town end of Middle Row being known as Castle Row.  Mentioned here:-

Thank you for all the information - Daniel is certainly starting to sound like a very interesting character!

Son Daniel was born after his father died in an explosion in Whinny Hill Colliery.
