Hi again - for the purpose of clarity, I'm back to confirm that the 'interesting' bits of the tree can't be backed up with evidence. I've looked at FamilySearch, Ancestry and FindMyPast and drawn blanks. There is no baptism for a Thomas Ashby 1776 in Saunderton, and Elizabeth Mealing actually married a William Gray in 1802.  I can lay that line of enquiry aside  :)

Have you seen the original entry for the baptism of John in 1784 or are you relying on transcripts.
I was just wondering whether Moses & Mary were married.

Hi Rosie99

No, it's just a single index, no transcript available.  I don't think the couple were married at that point either and I couldn't find a marriage later so perhaps it never happened.  It's possible they were passing through the area but a search doesn't bring any of them up anywhere else.

FindMyPast has the baptism of John also as John Baker. The transcription is a bit muddled.
It says Mother's first name: Mary, Father's first name: Moses Askley, Father's last name: Baker.

maybe Moses's surname wasn't Ashby, but Askley

Hi LizzieL - that was a useful bit of lateral thinking.  The couple are still elusive but I think you are right - Moses is Moses A*** Baker.  The only possible reference to him is a marriage to a Mary Peach in Rutland in 1773, then the A stood for Allen.  There are many entries for Moses Bakers after 1800 so I think it's a good bet you've cracked it.  Thank you  :)

It's a pity there's no actual image of the baptism record on line - as far as I can see anyway.

The  baptism for John is recorded under two surnames implying Mary Baker and Moses As...y weren't married.
Moses may not be local, Mary may have been in service somewhere some distance from West Wycombe and returned to her family when she became pregnant. Or Moses may not exist - a made up name to protect the real father.

Burial of a Moses Ashby at St Andrew Holborn, 8 January 1815.
Abode Pool's Buildings
Age 50.
So born circa 1764?

Also a Thomas Ashby buried there, 22 Feb 1818.
Abode Pool's Buildings
Age 28

Not so many Ashby burials in Holborn, there is a Mary Ashbey buried 26 April 1829, age 61.
Abode Fleur de Luce? (Lis?) Court.
Don't know if she is connected.
John

So Moses and Mary Ashby existed!
One of the Holborn baptisms is a John in 1798.

Moses Ashby and Mary Baker baptise a John Ashby in West Wycombe in 1784.
