Paul Grochla born 1907 Poland, emigrated 1955 to Quebec from Scotland
« on: Saturday 03 April 21 18:30 BST (UK) »
Hi

On the off chance I was wondering if anyone knows anything about, or has come across a Paul Grochla, born 17 Sep 1907, born Gross Kottulin, Poland in Quebec/Canada. He ended up in Scotland after WW2 and then appears on a passenger list to Quebec, sailing from Greenock, departing 30 Apr 1955. His parents were Joseph Grochla (1866 - ??) and Valeska Opielka (1873-1957). Family history has that his father Joseph was an active Polish nationalist who was murdered some time after WW1, during an uprising, by a blow to the head, because of his political views. Joseph was also apparently a skilled Tailor.

Last known address in the UK was 13 Park Street, Nairn

Thanks Sandra

Attached is the ships manifest, his occupation looks like Ret’d, I am assuming short for retired, but he seems a bit young for that as he was only 48.

Unusual surname, spelt that way - so perhaps one or both of the entries could be him  :-\
There is nothing earlier, so the dates would be about right when he didn't arrive until 1955.

Sandra you are obviously not a blues fan.

I would look for him in Winnipeg.  It was and is the Polish Capital of Canada and the Canadian Polish Congress is based there.  They may have assisted him with his immigration.  Plus he surely would have known or run into others from his hometown and the Polish Hall or one of the 3-4 Polish Churches would be a great places to connect.
