Trengrove & Whitburn - Next Step?
« on: Sunday 04 April 21 02:37 BST (UK) »
Hello

I have got back to William Henry Trengrove, Born 6 October 1833 in Gwennap Cornwall.

I am 99% sure that William Henry, was the son of Thomas Trengrove and Martha Whitburn.

(William Henry may have had a brother called Samuel Thomas, who married Elizabeth Perry, and emigrated to New Zealand - then again I could be confused on this point)

I would like to find out more about Thomas Trengrove and Martha Whitburn, and their past family lines, but have drawn a complete blank

Any advice would be much appreciated

Welcome to Rootschat Clipsey  :D

I can find three baptisms with parents Thomas and Martha at Gwenapp.

Martha Jane baptised 5th March 1829, James Whitburn baptised 31st July 1831 and your William Henry baptised 6th October 1833.

I'll see if I can find a marriage for Thomas and Martha.

Thomas and Martha married on 3rd July 1816 at Gwenapp

There is no image on Find My Past so I can't see who may have been the witnesses.  As you may know, this far back you don't get a lot of details on the marriage record.

I've found what appears to be the family in the 1841 census

Martha is now a widow and the family are living at Merry Meeting, Gwennap, Redruth, Cornwall and all born in the county.

Seven children listed along with what I assume is a lodger.  Thomas born 1826 has an occupation of Blacksmith.  Does this sound likely with what you know of the family?

Registration district   Redruth
Archive reference   HO107
Piece number   137
Book number   8
Folio number   65
Page number   19
Schedule   2094

Hopefully you can find the record using the above references.  If not put in either James W Trengrove born 1831, birth county Cornwall or William born 1833 birth county Cornwall.

Ah, I have found an image of Thomas and Martha's marriage on Family Search

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NFKH-BJ2

If you look to the left you can view the image.  I did see that Thomas signed himself as Jnr and one of the witnesses is Tho Trengrove so that may well be his father.

I've found a burial for Thomas on 5th January 1836 at Gwenapp age 40 years so birth year about 1796.

This may be Thomas' baptism.  Perranarworthal is 3.5 miles away from Gwenapp.

if you're researching in Cornwall, the opc database will help. Records are transcriptions from originals.

https://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/person-search/

The surname is usually found as Trengove

I don't think the 1836 is the correct one, address given as Ponsanooth on that one. There is another 5 June 1839 in Gwennap for Thomas Trengove 44 of Merry Meeting.
Possible baptism 1 May 1796 in Gwennap for Thomas, son of Thomas & Jenefer
Cornwall: Allen, Bevan, Bosisto, Carnpezzack, Donithorn, Huddy, James, Retallack, Russell, Vincent, Yeoman
Cards: Thomas (Llanbadarn Fawr)
Glam: Bowler, Cram, Galloway, James, Thomas, Watkins
Lincs: Coupland, Cram
Mon: Cram, Gwyn, John, Philpot, Smart, Watkins
Pembs: Edwards (St. Dogmael's)
Yorks: Airey, Bowler, Elliott, Hare, Hewitt, Kellett, Kemp, Stephenson, Tebb
