Hannah BELL and family Dunedin
« on: Sunday 04 April 21 07:16 BST (UK) »
Hannah BELL, a widow, and her family are supposed to have arrived in Dunedin on the Oriental in 1859. She died in Dunedin in 1867. Her husband was John BELL and he died in England in 1847.

Family were
Richard 1834-1914
George 1835-?
William 1839-1905
Anne 1842-?
Mary 1844-1918
Edward 1846-1912

Does anyone know where I can find a passenger list to confirm which of the children came to NZ. Not sure about George and Anne, know the others did. Tried all the usual sources but can't find anything.

Thanks.

Thanks very much.

That accounts for three of the children. Harriett is probably Hannah. No sign of William, who definitely came out as his death cert attached to his will in 1905 names his parents.

Death cert says 50 years in NZ. Perhaps he came out as the advance party.
But I realise that means he would have been only 15. So perhaps 50 years is just a rough guess.

Thanks Mckha489.

Coming out at that age is not to uncommon. In another line I am researching a brother and sister came out here by themselves in the mid 1880s, he was sixteen and she was twelve.

Looks like the sister Anne was here as well, before 1884 when as a widow Annie HERBERT she married a William MALCOLM in Christchurch. She died in Greymouth in 1910 at her sister Mary's residence. Can't find her death reg anywhere except in the old fiche indexes. Can't find where she is buried either.

Thanks

Presume you have the death notice mentioning that she died at sister's residence ... which also states "private interment"   ... ?    [Possibly churchyard burial ??  ]

There was this additional notice in the "Auckland Star" too  >

May be of help in tracking husband to check if he was later buried with her ?
