Paul Pegg, born in Wood Dalling c1791/93, died Stanfield in 1859
« on: Monday 05 April 21 16:53 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate any help in finding the baptism and parentage of Paul Pegg.  According to the 1851 census when he was living at 49 Barney Road, Thursford, he was 60 and born in Wood Dalling.  He died in 1859.  According to church records, he died age 66 and was buried on 24 Jan 1859 in Stanfield.  However, his tombstone at St Margaret's Stanfield, Norfolk seems to read "Sacred to the memory of Paul Pegg born Wood Dalling and died at Stanfield January 16th 1859 aged 68 years."

His first marriage was to Elizabeth Bradfield on 5 April 1814 in Wood Dalling with witnesses Moses Pegg and Mary Pegg.  Moses Pegg, the son of Joseph and Alice Pegg, was baptised on 29 June 1788 in Wood Dalling.  Phebe, the daughter Joseph and Alice Pegg, was baptised on 29 October 1791 in Wood Dalling, but I have not found a baptism for Paul Pegg, having searched in Wood Dalling 1783-1802.

Paul Pegg's second marriage was to Frances Howes on 25 March 1826 in Wood Dalling, and his third marriage was to Maria Love on 3 November 1830 in Heigham.

I have access to the Bishop's Transcript of Wood Dalling, but it seems to me that the baptisms for 1790 are missing? It includes up till Easter 1790, then the next lot is from Easter 1791. Perhaps your Paul was baptised in this time? Have you seen the Parish Record, or just the BTs?  :-\

Thank you for replying.  I have seen the parish registers for Wood Dalling, which include the baptisms for 1790.  Unfortunately, I did not find an entry for Paul Pegg.

Hi,

Maddy52 is correct there does appear to be a gap in the Bishops transcripts, images are available on
Family search

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939X-DY9W-YT?i=84&cc=1824688&cat=380173

However there is another
discrepancy between the Parish Register on FindMyPast and the Bishops transcripts.

Per BT’s and Registers
Bpt 11.2.1787 Moses son of Joseph & Ann Pegg, this Moses was buried 25.3.1787.

Register
Bpt
22.6.1788 Moses son of Joseph & Ann
BTs
has parents as Joseph & Alice

Other entries, I may not have them all.
BTs and Register
Bpt.
23.10.1791 phoebe dau of Joseph & Alice
Dec 1784 Alice dau of Joseph & Alice
9.2.1783 Susan dau of Joseph & Alice

Are these two separate families, do you have marriage for Joseph Pegg to Alice?

Thank you for your reply.

RE: "Bpt 22.6.1788 Moses son of Joseph & Ann
BTs has parents as Joseph & Alice"  I am inclined to think Ann was an error in the records, but I am not certain.

There is a record of Joseph Pegg marrying Alice Doughty, 28 Apr 1772, at Wickmere with Wolterton, Norfolk, which may be them.  Alice, age 66, wife of Joseph Pegg, was buried 14 May 1819 in Wood Dalling, Norfolk, Bishops Transcripts.  Joseph Pegg, age 70, was buried 21 Feb 1820 in Wood Dalling, Norfolk, Bishops Transcripts.

My working assumption is that the baptisms you mentioned are their children, but I cannot be sure.  I assume when the first Moses died, they named another son after him.  I have seen that pattern in other families after a child died.

Their first recorded child seems to have been Elizabeth Pegg, baptism 28 Nov 1773, Baconsthorpe, Norfolk, with a possible burial 18 June 1774, Baconsthorpe.

Other possible children:

Elizabeth Pegg, baptism 27 Apr 1777, Wood Dalling, Norfolk with a possible burial 4 May 1778, Wood Dalling, Norfolk.

Elizabeth Pegg baptism 14 June 1778, Wood Dalling, Norfolk

Susan Pegg, baptism 9 Feb 1783, Wood Dalling, Norfolk

Alice Pegg, baptism 12 Dec 1784, Wood Dalling, Norfolk

Moses Pegg baptism 11 Feb 1787, Wood Dalling, Norfolk with a possible burial 25 Mar 1787, Wood Dalling, Norfolk

Moses Pegg baptism 29 June 1788, Wood Dalling, Norfolk

Phebe Pegg baptism 29 Oct 1791, Wood Dalling, Norfolk

A birth for Paul Pegg in 1792/Jan 1793 would have been possible if he was 66 when he was buried on 24 Jan 1859 in Stanfield, or in 1790/Jan 1791 if he was 68 when he died at Stanfield January 16th 1859.
