How to obtain a Kenyan death certificate when I'm not Kenyan?
« on: Monday 05 April 21 21:00 BST (UK) »
I am looking to find my great-granduncle's death certificate. His name was David Francis Gatty Moir, and he died in Nairobi on the 9th of August 1944, aged 35. He died under mysterious circumstances.

It seems (from my research) that you can only order a Kenyan death certificate from the eCitizen portal, but to do that you must be a Kenyan citizen, a foreigner living in Kenya or a Kenyan living abroard. I am none of these things - I live in England.

Is there any other way I could get the death certificate?

(My father, being his grandnephew, is his closest living relative (along with his sister and cousins))

I lived and worked in Kenya for many years, and daughters were born there .... but being a Brit, we got birth certs from the British High Commission; so they might be worth trying.   Fortunately, we never needed death certs !

You could try this:      https://www.gov.uk/guidance/notarial-and-documentary-services-guide-for-kenya          they might be able to help ?

I don't have duel nationality so can't help in that way, and my daughters did, but had to revoke either their UK or Kenyan at the age of (I think) 21, which they did.

Sorry I can't help any more.      Good luck !        Bahati njema !

Do you have a family tree on Ancestry?  If not someone has him on their Beer/Redfern tree.  I can't access the tree as I don't have a sub.

Might be worth a look.

Ah, I did wonder if it might be.

Lydart has already suggested contacting the British High Commissioner's dept in Kenya.  When you write explain that David was born in England.  Might make a difference.

....and for the moment it's worth knowing that the Nairobi area is in very heavy lockdown with travel in and out forbidden, a curfew and other restrictions. So any replies are likely to be significantly delayed.

Was he the David Francis Gatty Moir of the Royal Army Medical Corps who was made a Lieutenant in the ACF section 7th November 1939?

If yes he should have Army papers which I would imagine give what he died from.

Yes, that's him - I doubt there were many David Francis Gatty Moir's living at the time! My family doesn't believe that his death was war related - his sisters were very secretive about him and his death was a taboo topic. Would his cause of death still be in his army papers then?
