1841 census

This has puzzled me for the longest time and I'm not sure if this has been asked before...I have tried a search of this forum, but got nothing.  So here goes...

Why, when pulling up an 1841 census in Ancestry, can you only add it to that one name and for everyone else in the family, you have to keep going into the census and adding THAT entry?  It's fine if there are only one or two offspring, but - as we all know - families often came with up to 10-12 children. All censuses thereafter are more sensible.   Any explanations?

Just a thought,  as I only have a simple tree on Ancestry -

Could it be that the 1841 doesn't show relationships so there's no way that the program can be sure they are of the same  family.

Think that's exactly right Gadget.  Relationships can't be assumed and it is down to us to determine and then add the info.

As a test, how does it tread the 1939 register as that doesn't show relationships either.

Duh!  Obviously my brain is suffering from selective memory loss!  I must admit I never gave it a thought about the relationships and I do believe you are all correct.  I asked because I have one rellie who married twice, and ended up with 17 children...not all in the 1841 census but quite a few, nonetheless!  Pen and paper out yet again!

With regard to the 1939 Register, that is easier as there tend to be far fewer family members showing on that one...and that is much more informative in that we actually get a dob.
