1939 - Census England.

Using the above records to find various relatives, I see that many ladies, who were single at the time have had their later married names added to the record.  Why was this done does any know the reason - it obviously helps with research, but I am sure this was not the reason

In 1948 when the NHS was set up, it took over the details collected in 1939 and made changes as and when people informed their doctor re marriage etc.

As has been said many times before - the 1939 National Register was NOT a census
That's because it was updated, by the NHS, until the 1990's.

I apologise for calling this a census and not a register, a slip of the pen I realise - thank you for your replies, I now understand.

Not just ladies, anyone who changed their name after the 1939 National Registration had been taken would, if they entered hospital or registered with a new doctor have their name amended to the new one.
For example my mum had a son by her first husband, when she remarried and had 3 more children he started using her new married surname, but it was not until he left home and registered with a doctor in Edinburgh (where he was at university0 that his name was changed on the 1939 National Registration.

Some slipped through the net though,  I have a family member who married in late 1940's but her name was not changed.  She had children and a few stays in hospital prior to the 1990's.
