Euphemia and Isabella Smith
« on: Tuesday 06 April 21 17:58 BST (UK) »
Hi Monica,

Hopefully you will see this message from our conversation last night re Isabella Smith's Father as I see most of our chat from last night has disappeared. Please see the attached and give me your thoughts please. In addition it appears Euphemia was 15 years old when she had Isabella.

All that has happened is that the Mods have created your own thread here www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=847107.0 so it wouldn't be confused with the details on the other searches for unrelated people.

I will ask one of the Mods to link this post to your main thread so you can keep everything together  :)

Re James Ritchie. Great to have this confirmation. Guessing there is a note on the birth reg for Isabella that makes a reference to the Register of Corrected Entries (RCE) and this document was attached to the birth on SP?

So, yes, you do have Isabella's father confirmed as a James Ritchie, an apprentice Stone Cutter (also referred to as Mason). You could check Charles' birth entry some years later to see whether Euphemia took the same action and anything has been added to his birth entry on the Register.

The only James Ritchie I could see in 1881 with the occupation of stone cutter was born in 1859 which would make him 13-14 years old when Isabella was born...which would not be good  :-\

I have found a better fit though who shows as Mason, the same age as Euphemia and also born in Nairn where, as we know, Euphemia was living and Isabella born:

James Ritchie, 26, Mason, lodger b. Nairn. He is lodging with the Anderson family at 96 Grove Street, Milton, Glasgow.

Thanks Monica, with Euphemia being 15 when she had Isabella I guess anything is possible. Will keep on persevering. Isabella's Birth certificate was not connected to the notice as far as I could see so it still does not show the father.

Re Charles when I looked a few years ago there was not a notice but I will look again. I think some of this explains why the Family tried to keep this hush

And with family in 1871, everyone born in Nairn:

Francis Ritchie 59 Blacksmith
Isabella Ritchie 53
Francis Ritchie 23
Alexander Ritchie 19
James Ritchie 17 Mason (apprentice) b. Nairn
George Ritchie 13
Janet Gollan 80 Mother

Address: Shaw's Close (no No), Nairn

Isabella's maiden name is Gollan, so Janet Gollan above must be her mother rather than Francis. Francis and Isabella married in Nairn on 6 March 1840.

Scotlands People have been over the years trying to add the images for RCE entries to the register entries that they pertain to. Did Isabella's birth reg show some notes on the l/h margin of the register entry? These notes are the references to the RCE, which for many certs you can now view the RCE online alongside the birth entry.

This is James' christening entry www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X1D5-CGZ

A small family tree here on A/try www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/8293955/person/24904310138/facts

Struggling to see what happened with James Ritchie after the 1881 census...
