Thanks for this Monica. I am going to have to ask my cousin Peter re the left hand side as he is the one that found it.

the only thing that is bothering me now is that I downloaded Euphemia's death certificate today and in the parents column there is a strike and then in the family column it has Helen Smith, daughter in law. It is on my work laptop. I will send it tomorrow.

Re James Ritchie...he headed off the US it seems. His marriage details in NY from 1893 www.familysearch.org/search/ark:/61903/1:1:24H6-N8L

I found a possible census entry earlier which now makes sense with the reference to the surname Dundas. From 1900 in Manhattan www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6QNS-W8F?cc=1325221&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AMSVQ-S24  Wrong birth date but occupation of stone cutter.

Some additional sources for James Ritchie for you to follow up here www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/97CV-8RN

Added: Death details for him www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/97CV-8RN here. Apart from error for mum's first name (Isabella v. Mary) seems good confirmation for you.

Hi Monica, this is the death certificate you suggested for Euphemia Smith. The question I have is the reference to her daughter in law Helen Muir Smith and the strike in her parents section. Could Charles have been married before he married Mary?

Charles Smith showed as a widower when he married Mary Carmichael in 1933. So, yes, I would say Helen is likely first wife who reported mother in law Euphemia's death in 1916. She looks to not have known/remembered Euphemia's parents' names. This is something that happens as we know even today.

On the death reg, it shows Helen as Helen Muir Smith. With that detail of the middle name, there is this marriage in Edinbugh that you could check:

Charles Smith and Helen Muir Geddes
1914
Ref 685/4 34
St Giles Edinburgh

There is a death showing in 1930 that looks to be Charles' wife's entry:

HELEN MUIR SMITH/GEDDES
Age 42
1930
Ref 282/1 35
St Mary and St Peter, Dundee
