Yeoman Warders of the Tower
« on: Wednesday 07 April 21 19:16 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find information on these men during the period of Queen Anne to Early Georgian.
In particular, I seek details of recruitment, would they have had to have been ex-servicemen.

King Henry VIII moved his official residence to the Tower of London in 1509; so the Tower was a Royal Palace.
So, the warders were always a military corps; guardsmen.
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

You could try writing to The Tower.  I did this a few years ago and found them to be very helpful.
I did find a list by googling but it only goes back to the mid 1800’s.

A good idea sue, thank you. Considering their fame and long existence I was rather surprised at the lack of easy info.

Yes, have to be ex-service men and now women, they have to have a clean record and hold the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. They have to have no dependants of financial commitments. There is a strict selection process.

The above is all I am interested in, nothing before or since.
