At a Hammersmith Military Tribunal in 1916, in results of appeals, one was dismissed in respect of a Cheltenham Wake Lewis, gauger, valuer, etc.

Thanks, I did come across that in a newspaper a while ago.  Military docs show he was invalided out in 1919 with eyesight issues (the source of the original clipping with his wife's name that I was puzzling over).  He later became a crew member on passenger ships across the Atlantic, and died young in 1926.

Since posting the original query I've discovered a lot about this family (Cheltenham x 2, Luks family, Wake Smiths etc), but still a few puzzles that I need to summarise and then post in a different section to see what ideas Rootschatters have.
