B G Elliot and Sons, Timber Merchants
« on: Thursday 08 April 21 09:08 BST (UK) »
Hello All,

I am trying to find any information about the company B G Elliot and Sons, Timber Merchants and Saw Mills, who traded from 124 Kentish Town Road, London NW5.
They operated from the late 19th Century to at least the 1950's. It was a family owned business with Bignell G Elliot, the founder and then his sons became involved in the business.

Paul
I lived in Ardwick, Manchester in the early 1960s as a small child and much travelling of the world has now led me to want to know more about my roots. Carter, Beckwith, Connolly, Heron and Kelly are all names that form part of my family tree.

Thanks,

The name is spelt either way. The B G Elliott of 1897 is the founders son of the same name.

I have found some detail of the family but nothing about the company they owned and operated.

Many would claim that the spellings are not interchangable, and the differences do have some family and geographic significance.  Most of your family have used ELLIOTT for many years and the BIGNELL name seems to have Devon roots.
How far have you followed the family?

Variations in spelling
An old rhyme commemorates these differences:

The double L and single T
Descent from Minto and Wolflee,
The double T and single L
Mark the old race in Stobs that dwell.
The single L and single T
The Eliots of St Germains be,
But double T and double L,
Who they are nobody can tell.

To be honest its the company they ran that I am more interested in.

I have quite a lot of details about the family and the thread through at least 3 generations is the timber business. However, theres almost nothing on the internet about B G Elliott Timber Merchants which seems unusual as they traded for many years and existed at least until the 1950s.

I think, at least from 1914,  that they may have traded as Elliott & Sons.

However - there is also a Southampton firm of the same name  >:(

There is a receipt for timber from one of them for UCL in 1948 at the Wellcome Library but I can only see the thumbnail

What do you need to know about the Company if you are not interested in the whole family?

According to an article in the Lancashire Evening Post (26 Sept 1933) in his will Sir Bignell George Elliot left £10 to any employers who had been with the company for 10 years or more.  However, if anyone who should have benefitted had gone on strike for any reason, then they would forfeit his legacy.
