Army Pension 1878
« on: Thursday 08 April 21 10:17 BST (UK) »
The person I am researching left the Army in 1878 after 22 years service and was awarded a pension.

The record shows the Board's decision and the amount columns are headed S (shillings) and D (pence)

The strange thing is that the shillings column for him is empty but the pence column shows 25 which in old money would be two shillings and one penny.

Can anybody help me with an explanation please as to how much he was awarded.

Thanks

Perhaps 25 pennies per day pension? or 25 pennies a week? In WW1 the British solider was on a shilling a day, bob a day.

When I joined British Army in 1963 as an Apprentice Tradesman, I got 2 pounds and 10 shillings a week. Half of which you had to save in your POSBY, Post Office Savings a/c.
Residing in Batemans Bay, Australia, but originally from 'Mother England', transported to HM Colonies in 1966.

Can you post a link to the record in question? Or give us a name and number?

I found his discharge papers (Mussett) but I haven't found the record that you refer to - is it one of the documents on Fold 3?

Thanks Abun for letting me see the document. I think it can only mean that his pension was 25d a day, 2/1. Expressing it in pennies possibly makes it a little easier to calculate the amount due quarterly: £9 9s 7d in a 91 day quarter.
