Great, hope we have solved the mystery. In one of the reports of his death it was mentioned that he had served in WW1 also, perhaps the torpedo story stemmed from there?

The Family have Downloaded the Thanet Advertiser Inquest Report and obtained a PDF copy of the Death Certificate.

They are now curious as to Whether the Merchant Navy Medal Card found in the National Archives is him and how they can find what ships he served on and which one was possibly Torpedoed?

Just realised I could go further in Archives with this and Downloaded  it all.

William Bertie James not our William has different Father and Home address Gt Shelford Cambridgeshire not Liverpool
