Victorian photo of young Manner's woman in needing of dating
« on: Thursday 08 April 21 22:11 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I'd really appreciate help with dating the photo attached - it's of an unknown young woman, and getting a good estimate on the date would be very helpful! The dress looks almost too fanciful to me 'normal' clothing to me, though I'm far from an expert and would appreciate any insights that could be provided on the hair/fashion in particular.

To me, it looks like an Edwardian actress. It's as if she's posed on a stage set.

I'd be interested in what Carol and Jim think.

It could, just possibly, be mid 1880s of a young girl whose hair is not yet up and hem is not fully down - so 16-18. however, I still think it looks theatrical.

I have absolutely nothing to add apart from she looks as though she's standing in front of a mural if that's the same as what Gadget was meaning?...

It's a beautiful pic of a stunning young woman & I'd love to see it coloured  :)

Like one of G&S's 'Sisters and Cousins and Aunts'  from HMS Pinafore?   I could go with that!   ;D

I agree. I thought the same before reading the other replies. It’s got a theatrical vibe.
