Thanks everyone.

Managed to find his parents and siblings in the England census. Charles Milton Parker was in the army and so were his three sons, including David, at various times.

There are a number of trees on Ancestry that have all the children except David, who was the youngest, possibly because he did not appear in any census with his parents. In 1871 I believe they are in Ireland as the eldest daughter marries in Cork in that year.

Still can't find a marriage for him or what happened to his wife. Might have to get his NZ death certificate and see what that says.

You may be lucky and have his spouse and children named on the death certificate.

I assume you've seen this item mentioning David's illness (since his wife's "subscription" article says he worked for Lowes and Jarvis):

Thanks Maddy, I had seen that article.

Unfortunately NZ death certs from that time do not name children, only parents and spouse. Children's ages are given though.

Ordered his death printout which arrived today and makes interesting reading.

Turns out he was not married. He had one illegitimate son aged 1, which is the birth I mentioned in the original post.

The informant who registered the death was Emily Alice NEWLOVE. She was calling herself Mrs E A Parker when she purchased his burial plot. Makes sense with the sister administering his estate rather than his 'wife'.

He had been in NZ for 14 months.

Can anyone find Emily Alice in Queensland.
