Clifford Dorrington
« on: Friday 09 April 21 21:47 BST (UK) »
Leaving the Navy in 1919 Clifford Dorrington (b1894) moved to 39 Gynor Place Ynyshir Rhondda S Wales.  He was born in Leeds the son of John and Amy (Thomason) Dorrington.

In 1889 one John Dorrington born Henham Sussex of 8 Llywelyn Street Ystradyfodwg died aged 70.  His widow Jemima died in 1901 aged 69.  They had children Rosalie (1861) unmarried - Ethel (1864) unmarried - John ((1865) - Edith (1870.)

Am trying to link Clifford Dorrington to the John Dorrington who died in 1889.  They are not father and son.
Clifford's father was John Dorrington b.1852/3 in Whittlesey Cambridgeshire - and this John's father is noted as James Dorrington on John's marriage certificate.

Possibly John Dorrington (Henham) who died in 1889 was a brother to James Dorrington (have no info about him.)

Of course it may just be coincidence that there are two families with the name Dorrington in the small village of Ystradyfodwg. (Clifford had no connection with the place before he left the navy.)

I have details of all Clifford's siblings and details of his life in South Wales and Australia.

Many thanks.

Births June qtr 1894
Dorrington    Clifford Thomason   Hunslet    9b   281 mmn Thomason

Why do you think there is a connection to the 1889 death apart from the surname?

Have you traced John b 1852 Cambridgeshire back on censuses to establish where his father was born?  I can't find an entry for him on either the English or Welsh censuses before 1891.  No birth reg either.  Both 1891 & 1901 show Whittlesey as his birthplace - I'm stumped ???

Thanks Carole.

The John Dorrington born 1852 father of Clifford is very elusive - the first sighting is his marriage in 1885 to Amy Thomason.  Not found on any censuses before 1891. No Birth certificate.

(have posted about this John D a number of times on this site with no luck.)

This John D died in 1910 and most of his children ended up in Canada or USA.  On the 1920 USA census his daughter noted that her father was born in Wales and was Welsh. (This contradicts the info this John D put on the census from of 1891 where he said he was born in Whittlesey Cambridgeshire.)

When Clifford left the navy he was an orphan - no family home - for some reason he ended up in South Wales - somewhere he had never lived previously.
Did he end up there because he had a Dorrington relative there?
The John D. who died in 1889 was born in Henham - in 1861 was in Watford -1871 Nottingham -1881 Builth Wells - 1891 Ystradyfodwg.

(I have details of Cliffords marriage children and death,)

It seemed a bit of a coincidence that there are two families called Dorrington in an obscure place like Ystradyfodwg (apologies to the good folk of Ystrad Y F)

Why didn't he hang on for the 1911 census - just to confirm his birthplace.  See wife Amy died 1908.
