Hi, I am happy that I have correctly taken my WRAY family ancestry back to the birth of a William Wray bp. 12 Jan 1670 in Ottringham but now need help with his antecedents but not his descendants thanks.
His baptism shows his father to be William Wray but I can find no suitable William Wray marriage in the locality for the elder William to account for the birth of William junior in 1670 or his sibling Elizabeth in 1673.
29 trees on Ancestry either also have no marriage for William the elder or have his wife as Ann(e) Agar with a marriage in Ottringham in 1729? although several have recorded the marriage to be in 1698? . That actual marriage is recorded in York on 2 May 1729 according to the England Select Marriages Records on Ancestry. I assume all the people with this info have copied each other and tried to make the detail fit - which it doesn't.
a) I wondered if anybody with access to the East Riding records might be able to confirm whether York in the 1729 marriage record really means York or might it mean Yorkshire, and
b) whether anybody can find a marriage for a William Wray (this seems to be spelled Reay the earlier you go) in a locality near Ottringham around about 1690.
Thanks for any help, Pheno
