Looking for death record of William Herlihy (1902-1943)
« on: Saturday 10 April 21 16:12 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm trying to conclusively document what happened to all of my dad's aunts and uncles and, whilst it was fairly easy to trace the ones that emigrated to England or stayed in Ireland, I am struggling to find the death registration of my great-uncle, William and would be really grateful if someone could find out how he died.

On Ancestry's free access to worldwide collections weekend, I managed to find his WWII registration card which reads as follows:

William Herlihy - 173 Warren Avenue, Boston, Suffolk, MASS

Date of Birth: February 2nd 1902 (his birth registration in Ireland lists him as born February 1st 1902)

Place of Birth: Tralee, Kerry

Employer's name and address: Boston Cab Co. (the only census I can find him on (1930) has his occupation as 'auto repairer' so I assume he was fixing cabs)

His next of kin is his cousin, Hannah Maria Galvin, wife of Patrick Joseph Maloney.

At the top of the record is written: deceased January 17th 1943.

I've tried to find out what happened but I don't know much about American records and I haven't managed to find anything.

Thank you in advance!

Queenie  :)

Given the WWII connection , I looked through the WWII Army Casualties: Massachusetts, Suffolk County lists but could find no trace of William Herlihy.

Will keep looking....

Thank you  :) I'm not sure whether he died in the war or not. All my dad's cousins know is that he died relatively young and didn't get married or have children.

Sorry - checked through Navy casualties and various other sites - nothing. Only William Herlihy I can find who died in 1943, died in Manhattan, NY at the end of 1943.

Will let you know if I find anything.

It is on Ancestry.  The only other information is the volume and page number where it is in the index, so not helpful unless you want to order the certificate.

Thank you! So it looks like he died of non-war related causes. I suppose I will have to order the death certificate to find the exact cause.
