George Valentine Estimated date of this photo please
« on: Saturday 10 April 21 16:49 BST (UK) »
This photo was amongst others we know to be my husbands family, we believe it was taken in Stonehaven, Scotland at Watsons Studio as we have another photo with the same backcloth.

it is on Black card but has no name to front or reverse.

Can anyone give an estimate as to date, also if possible does anyone have any idea as to the gentleman's profession, we believe it may be George Valentine, he was a Slater and employed 5 men...

Thanks in anticipation Patricia

It reminds me of the Isambard Kingdom Brunel photo with the outfit and tall hat.

He was around till 1859.

I would say this was a late 1860s early 1870s photo and he is wearing a stovepipe hat.

Another yes for 1860's & possibly a later reprint.
His topper suggests a man above working class.

Surely the scroll is significant. Is it the plan for a building or something?

Hello, thank you everyone, the dates would tie in with George having been born in 1812 that would make him early to mid 50's in the photo.

The census tells me he was a Slater (roof tiler/builder) and an employer. He had 8 surviving children, 4 girls and 4 boys, they lived on Cameron Street in Stonehaven. the boys all became doctors and of the girls, none married and they remained at home.

The only other contender would have been John Forbes, he was a Mason and ship owner in Stonehaven but he died in 1858 aged 69, I doubt that his could be him, but am open to suggestions.

Thank you..

Patricia
