Two possible baptisms for Catherine
« on: Sunday 11 April 21 11:58 BST (UK) »
I am trying to take the line of Catherine Edwards back a little further. According to the 1851 census, she was born about 1762 in Cerrigydrudion, Denbighshire. When she died at Tanyfron in October 1853, her burial record gave her age as 92 which makes her year of birth about 1761.

I have found two possible baptisms for a Catherine Edwards at Cerrigydrudion:

1. 7 Jan 1759 "Catherine the bastard daughter to Thos Edward of ...? in the parish of Llanawr begotten on the bodye of Gwen Jones of this parish"

2. 22 Jan 1764 "Catherine the daughter of Richard Edward of Rhos...? by Margaret his wife"

At first, I was going to go with the earlier baptism but would an illegitimate child take her father's surname? In my experience, most have taken their mother's name  ???

If the parents later married,  then it's possible she took her fathers name.

What did she name her children, especially her daughters? Were any named Gwen or Margaret (often the eldest daughter was named after a mother's mother).
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Her daughters were Eleanor, Jane and Sarah. Sons were Isaac and Robert.

She was married at Llansannan to Morris Roberts in 1790. Maybe this is the church her family used?

Oh dear -- bang goes that idea of her using her mother's name for a daughter!

No marriages between Thomas Edward/s and Gwen Jones in Denbighshire so I think the earlier baptism is unlikely. Did Richard Edwards leave a will? If he was the father of "your" Catherine, she may be named in a will under her married name.

Richard Edwards and Margaret Lloyd were married at Cerrigydrudion, 7 May 1753. Both single and both of that parish.

Baptisms at Cerrigydrudion for the children of Richard and Margaret:

16 Nov 1753, Margaret
30 Nov 1754, Elizabeth
10 Jul 1757, Edward
1 Nov 1759, Robert
(22 Jan 1764, Catherine)
6 Jan 1767, Margaret

The five year gap between Robert and Catherine's births might suggest Catherine was born a few years earlier than she was baptised?
