Help with 1911 census
« on: Sunday 11 April 21 16:28 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone with sharper eyes than mine might be able to help me with this one.        I have looked everywhere I can think of, and tried wild cards etc., but am having no luck.

I am looking for my great uncle Samuel Kinchin, born 1895 in Poplar, in the 1911 census.     He'd be 15 or 16 so could be anywhere, off working.       His father is dead and he is not living with his widowed mother, Kate Kinchin, who is staying with her sister.     Where on earth can he be?

Whilst I can find no evidence in 1911 would it have been a possibility that as he would have been 16 by the time of census he was in the military.

Have you tried looking for his siblings? I did a quick look for his younger brother, Michael John Kinchin (1897-1952), and couldn't find him in 1911 either. Michael joined the navy in June 1912, when he was just 15, which lends weight to the theory that his brother joined the army at a young age.

Samuel Kinchin was definitely in the army by August 1914 (2nd Yorkshire Light Infantry). He is mentioned in this ancient thread:

An older brother, Daniel (1893-1974) was in the army and with his unit in the 1911 census.

Michael John joined the Royal Navy as did brother George.
Daniel attested to the Royal Artillery in 1909 giving an address in Millwall, but the attestation was in Cork. Any chance that Samuel was in Ireland with family?

Thank you for the suggestions, everyone.     I did think that maybe he might have joined the army young as his brother Dan did, but still wondered why I couldn't find him.      I have checked the 1911 census in Ireland, but no joy there.       One day, maybe!
