Gunner in 10th brigade Royal artillery
« on: Sunday 11 April 21 23:28 BST (UK) »
The record for a grt grandfather of mine, Joseph Barnes, born 1852 in Sussex, states that 1881 census his occupation was a gunner in the royal artillery. On his marriage certificate in 1876 it states he is in 10th brigade.
I can find no record. I've looked in FindMyPast, Ancestry and National Archives. Is there any where else I can look?
I have him in 1861 census also but cannot find a 1871 record.
Thank you

I am struggling.
I cannot find record of a birth of Joseph Barnes 1851-3 in Sussex on Free BMD, nor can find an entry for him in 1881 on Family Search.
Do you have any further details that might help us help you in your search?

National Archives Record for the Worldwide British Army Index for 1871, 10th Brigade RA.

There doesn't appear to be a Joseph Barnes 10th Brigade RA, listed in Malta for 1871.

There is however a William Barnes listed for 10th Brigade RA, Malta 1871. Rank Gunner, Service Number 2219.

Did Joseph Barnes use, or have, the alternative forename of William ?

Thank you.
He uses Joseph on all census. Birth certifate is also Joseph.
However. One of his sons, born 1890s was William.
Maybe he liked the name.
Puzzled now.
