Joseph Withers 1690 -1761
« on: Monday 12 April 21 06:51 BST (UK) »
In his Will, dated 4th of December 1730 and proved 1st of October 1761 at London, Joseph Withers refers to several members of his family including his father John, a brother John and his dear wife Rachel (sometimes as Rachell). There are a number of other descendants also named.

I have searched for his marriage to Rachel at St Martins, Birmingham, but was unable to be clear about it. I would be most grateful if you might assist in clarifying Rachel's name and the date of this marriage.

FamilySearch: England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975, has his baptism as 21st July 1690 at St Martins, he was presented for baptism by his father John.

Thank you
David

Is the marriage you found the one of 'Jos Withers' to Rachel Brown. 12 th April 1715 at St Martin's Birmingham?
'Jos' will be an abbreviation for Joseph.
This is just a transcription on familysearch. Also only a transcript on Ancestry.
The familysearch film number (given on the Ancestry record) is 0919765, but this is locked for viewing at home. You have to go to a LDS library to view it (or affiliate library, which I understand some libraries sometimes are).

I see from his will (on Ancestry) he was a Tailor.
Did you see the record on findmypast which  looks as if it is him taking on an apprentice in 1718?

The image is available on Ancestry.  Transcribed as 19 April 1714 and surname of Willam.

Jos Withars and Rachel Brown both of this
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Did you do the reverse thing to find this BB and put in Rachel Brown instead of Joseph Withers?
There's no image attached to the hit for Joseph Withers, but weirdly is an image if you search for Rachel Brown. (I see they're from a different films).
Transcribing it as 'Williams' is a pretty poor attempt by the transcriber.
And the date is wrong too.
The date shown in the register (clip attached), definitely says 'Aprill 1715 the 17'.

If you look at the whole page, the entries directly above are for Jan 1714.Then this one for April 1715, then another 7 entries for Jan 1714, and a couple for Feb 1714, until it returns to April 1715.
My guess is the vicar or whoever compiled the register, found another piece of paper in his pocket with Jan and Feb 1714 marriages after he'd started April 1715 with Jos Withers, and then had to fill them in.

Yes, that is the entry I found, and yes via Rachel Brown.   :)
