What Ship would my Grandad have sailed to North Africa on?
« on: Monday 12 April 21 14:01 BST (UK) »
On my Grandad Edward Butt's Service Records it states he was assigned to draft RN00A and embarked for North Africa on the 18/05/1943, disembarking on the 27/05/1943 and being assigned to (X)IV unposted re-enforcements. Is there anyway I can find out what ship he would of sailed on and which ports he would of left from and landed at?
Thanks for any help you can give.

It is rare to find travel details of service personnel at the best of times, unless travelling on civilian ships. You are asking about war time, I think you will have to be content with what information you have.

As pointed out by Jebber.
Troopships and troop convoys are always difficult to research. Not least because of the security surrounding troop movements . Names of vessels carrying troops were hardly given instead the vessel was given a code number which was changed after every voyage.
However all is not lost.
If you could find the war diary of your grandads regiment or unit it may give a port of departure. If you can find this you are at least on your way. Other rootschatters with more knowledge of Army matters may be able to guide you.
A quick search reveals that Convoy KMF 15 sailed from the Clyde 19/05/1943 arrived Algiers 28/05/1943. Allow for a day or two embarking and disembarking. This is specltive, you realy need the port of departure or port of arrival to get started.
