Trouble finding a Marriage In Yorkshire
« on: Monday 12 April 21 19:02 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm struggling to find a Marriage between Benjamin Perry born 1849 in High Green & Mortomley, Yorkshire and a Harriet ?? born 1856 in York. Any help would be much appreciated.

This is what I've got so far:
On the 1891 census he was 42, a Coal Miner and living in High Green & Mortomley, Yorkshire as a Boarder with Harriet ( 35 ) Head, 3 sons Thomas ( 17 ) a Coal Miner : possibly Harriet's son from another marriage as there's a big age difference,  Harry ( 6 ) a Scholar, Arthur ( 4 ) a Scholar  + 3 nephews Chapman ( 15 ) a Coal Miner, William ( 9 ) a Scholar and Ernest ( 7 ) a Scholar. The nephew's were living with them as their father James Perry ( 1851 ) was in the Wortley Union Workhouse and their mother Jane Ann Chapman ( 1852 ) there's no record.

On the 1901 census he was living 52, a Green Grocer and living in High Green & Mortomley, Yorkshire with his wife Harriet ( 45 ) , 2 sons Harry ( 16 )  a Pony Driver Pit, Arthur ( 14 ) Apprentice ?  and 3 nephews Geo Chapman ( 26 ) a Coal ? , William ( 19 ) ? Coal Pit and Ernest ( 16 ) a Pony Driver. The nephew's were living with them as their father James Perry ( 1851 ) was in the Wortley Union Workhouse on the 1891 census and died in 1892 and their mother Jane Ann Chapman ( 1852 ) there's no record on the 1891 census.

Perhaps Benjamin and Harriet were not married? Would explain the baptism and the birth certificate.

1881 is interesting. IN Worsborough bridge

Joseph Perry    35 - b sheffield. Married
Harriet Perry    25 - b Sheffield. Wife
Thomas Batty    7 - son b Barnsley
George Perry    1 - son b Barnsley
Mary Ann Passmor    13 - servant
E. Pickersgill    20 - servant

There's every possibility Joseph is Ben and James' brother

Then there's the probate register for the death of Harriet Perry of High Green in 1905.  described as wife of Joseph, probate to Benjamin Perry, greengrocer

Harriet Hetty Passmore marries a John Batty in 1873, then as Harriet Batty marries Joseph in Barnsley in 1879

By 1891 Joseph appears to be back with his mother and says he's single

On Joseph and Harriet's marriage record it states Joseph's father is also called Joseph.

However, this may be an error on the part of the curate as on the 1871 census there is this family in High Green & Mortomley:

George Perry 60 Head
Jane Perry 55 Wife
Joseph Perry 24 Son
Benjamin Perry 22 Son
James Perry 20 Son

Something definitely happened

George Perry from 1881 is living as adopted son with another family on 1891.

1885 sees the birth of Ann Eliza Perry, mmn Passmore. She dies in infancy, but there's a baptism with mother Harriet, widow

It looks like Joseph may have lived locally and remarried in 1906, dying in 1935
