Conviction records? - England
« on: Tuesday 13 April 21 11:14 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have recently found the cremation record for my 1st cousin, once removed,  Joseph Keating, which shows he died in Walton Prison, Liverpool, 30th May 1983, aged 43.  I've found a public record which would suggest he took his own life.
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/493975/deaths-in-custody-table.pdf

How can I find out what he was in prison for?  I know newspaper archives are the obvious place to start but I don't have a subscription to any of these sites. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

As far as I know - the 100yr rule would apply to sight/release of those records

You may be able to locate an inquest or coroners record at Liverpool RO which may give some info
Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
Carlin (Ireland & Liverpool) Doughty & Wright (Liverpool) Dick & Park (Scotland & Liverpool)

Why would the 100 year rule apply? Aren't convictions a public record, they are published in the media every day?

Try searching The National Archives Discovery. I located trial details of someone tried for attempted murder, the documents, including photos of injuries sustained by  the victim, were released to the public domain after fifteen years.

My understanding is that most deaths in custody go to inquest, the death certificate will show the cause of death. The inquest may be reported in the paper.

I know he killed himself, how isn't important to me.  What I really wanted to know was why he was in prison which I now know unfortunately.
