CHANGING NAMES! What do you think?

As usual, an excellent episode today of BBC Radio4 'Word of Mouth' hosted by Michael ROSEN, on the subject of 'Changing Names'.

If changing formally by Deed Poll, is there any central register in UK for this event?

Of course in the recent UK naming traditions,  upon marriage [or Civil Partnership], one partner [usually the woman] takes the family name of the partner's tribe.

I guess, that like most other traditions, things seem to be rapidly changing today!

There are two types of Deed Poll unenrolled and enrolled.

Unenrolled you make a written statement yourself which you sign and get two witnesses to sign it.
An enrolled Deed Poll you have to apply to the Court and pay for it, if it is an enrolled one, you should find an announcement in the London Gazette.

I changed my surname by Deed Poll via a solicitor, and the only people who have access to it are him, me, and the various banks etc I sent a copy to.

I hung onto this surname when I married, and my son also has this surname.

I know of a woman who took her husbands surname on marriage & kept it after their divorce.  When she remarried, her new husband took her surname - ie the surname of the first husband

I changed my name by unenrolled deed poll with the UK Deed Poll Service. There isn’t a central register, other than for enrolled deed polls with the Royal Courts of Justice.

The organisation I used, linked here https://www.changemyname.org.uk maintains their own register of deeds, however I imagine with GDPR etc it would never be of any use to the ancestry and genealogy community in the future.
