Funnily enough there are 2 sets of papers for him - one set gives what seems to be 'vomiting after food' as the reason for him being medically unfit abt a week after he enlisted.

I can't understand why his death cert states 'returning soldier' and why he is buried in the 'Vets' section of the cemetery in Canada - IF that is, Vets means Army veterans.

Bit of a mystery unless he rejoined the Army when his medical problem was resolved - and then he did actually serve in WW1.

Can't see anything in the Canadian newspapers about his death - but it may be that papers for the area in question aren't on line for the required date yet - OR I've missed it!

Maybe some of the 'whizzes' on the Military Board can clarify the reference to 'returning soldier' and possibly explain why he is in a 'Vet' section of a cemetery, on the evidence available at the moment.

(Even better -- find some more Army papers maybe).

Certainly seems as if wife Joan remained in Scotland. From the 1930-40 Valuation Rolls:

Mrs Joan DICKSON
Tenant
HOUSE 73 CARNWATH ROAD CARLUKE
CARLUKE
1930
VR010700490-

Monica,                                                                                                                                        I knew she lived in Carnwath Road Carluke but he was not with her then. None of the family that are still living knows anything about him. He is a mystery to all the family. I've been told he was not good to Joan at all

From what Rosie and Pennines have found above, looks like he left her in 1926, going by that shipping manifest that Rosie has posted details on.

The family remained in Carnwath Road didn't they. Valuation Rolls only go up to 1940 currently on SP (they are slowing adding years online).

Not sure how you would find further details of his life in Canada. Maybe start a new thread on the Canadian Board here on RC and add a link to this thread so that others can see what Pennines and Rosie have already found.

Rosie has posted his death details too so again you have definite info and records to work with.

fancy nancy,

You have been provided with details of his death in Canada - his emigration details to Canada, a photo of his gravestone - and details of a brief Army record.

So you do now know he went to Canada in 1926 and later died there. Or had you not seen the previous replies giving you that information?
