James Cranstoun - Lapidary(precious stone cutter) Pre 1841 info
« on: Wednesday 14 April 21 11:16 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I'm trying to find any information on John Cranstoun b.1805 Edinburgh d.1857 Brighton. He married Elizabeth Dallas in 1827 in Edinburgh. I've found the names of her parents - Robert Dallas and Elizabeth Grubb - but nothing more on them.
John moved with his family to Red Lion Yard off Red Lion Street, Clerkenwell, London some time before the 1841 and subsequently to Brighton before the 1851 census. Unfortunately, John Cranstoun is a pretty common name in Lowland Scotland and though I've trawled through all I can find in FindMyPast, I've drawn a blank.
Any help much appreciated - harvey21

Well there is this one from Family Search

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F31R-WX2

Do bear in mind that sometimes surnames did get altered a little.  This one is also on Scotland's People with an image available at a cost of 6 credits.

Was his name James or John?

The death of John Cranstoun is on familysearch 4th Q 1857, but nothing on GRO.

A family tree has John with parents Thomas Cranston 1775 - Janet Galloway 1755 - married 1 Oct 1804.

That's the spelling and dates on the tree but it does have the same wife Elizabeth Dallas so something to check out.

I don't think Janet's birth date of 1755 can be correct. Where did you find the tree, Milliepede?
