I looks as if she used her nee name and not her widowed married surname on his birth, does that sound about right ?

Sounds like it doesn't it.  One way to be certain would be to obtain the birth certificate unless a baptism can be found.

I wonder if Ada's age was given as younger than she actually was?

WORLD, ADA       OFFWOOD
GRO Reference: 1884  M Quarter in PANCRAS  Volume 01B  Page 21

There is no birth record for 1887 and Alfred's year of birth is 1889.  Presumably Ada wished to appear younger than she was and thereby close the gap between herself and Alfred.

This looks to be Alfred's birth record

BRUNDLE, ALFRED  EDWARD     BENNETT
GRO Reference: 1889  D Quarter in ISLINGTON  Volume 01B  Page 340

The marriage in 1909 said she was 25, fits with 1884 birth

Thanks everyone for the replies.

The misspelling of Hallaway seems to make the most sense as other searches have all led to dead ends.

The only thing it would mean was that she was 39-40 when Alfred was born.

I think I will request the marriage certificate and Alfred Jr's Birth Certificate to confirm.

Not an unusual occurrence.  My great grandmother was 43 when she had my grandfather who was the youngest of 12 children.

I thought it should always be the mother's maiden surname on the child's birth registration, not any previous married surname. What if she had been married more than once before?

Yes of course it should be her maiden surname.

I have seen it either way,  sometimes it does show both nee name and previous marriage but registered in the mother's  recent marriage name.
Would solve the problem if birthcert was purchased
