William Egglestone South Shields / Jarrow
« on: Wednesday 14 April 21 14:01 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm new here and I have a bit of a mystery!

on the 1939 register my great great grandparents James and Harriet Adamson are recorded at living at Chester Le Street with their children and a boy called William Egglestone born 7 Feb 1927. I have no Egglestone in my family and I have no idea why he's there.

So, I did a bit of digging using GRO and discovered he had been born in South shields to a Florence Selina Egglestone (nee Guthrie) and William Egglestone. William (the son) was the eldest and he had 3 sisters (I'm not sure if i am allowed to name them in case they are alive so I wont) The youngest sister was born 1935. I then sadly discovered their mother Florence died in the same year and quarter as the youngest daughter, and their father died the following year. I applied for their death certificates which I received today. Florence died of puerperal (?) eclampsia and William died in an accident in 1936 at the Tube works in Jarrow. He was a painter and decorator and fell from a staging (?) which resulted in a fracture to the base of his skull and brain swelling.

I am however really struggling with William and his sisters. I don't seem to be getting any information on what happened to them. I'm wondering if they were adopted out after their father's death and William was adopted by my ggg grandparents? or perhaps he was evacuated from South Shields? The tree i made for them on Ancestry isn't generating any hints and I cant fond any information on them, although i have found the names of William's father's parents and siblings via census.

Can anyone shed any light on what has happened or where else i can look for information. I am aware they are most likely not even related to me, but i feel a connection to them (especially young William as he was living with my relatives.)

Thank you :)
 ???

Welcome to Rootschat

William died 28.2.2004 in North Yorkshire but left a will.  For £1.50 you can download a copy as it may name his wife/children etc

Thank you. Can I ask where and how you found that out? I’ve been going round in circles!

His death reg can be found on Ancestry which shows his birthdate as same as 1939 entry.

The actual death date is shown on the probate entry.  I always check the probate website for a will in these circumstances.

His 3 sisters are more difficult but if you are able to get some info about William it's possible he could have  living children who may be able to give you more info

He lived in Northallerton but the 2002 Electoral Register does not show any other person at the same address

He did not marry Millicent Scott in 1953 - that William died 2002 and was born 1920

Yes I saw that and realised it didn't fit. I've ordered the will from the link you sent me and found it on Ancestry also. Thank you for your help  :)

Hi there, and welcome to Rootschat!

Ancestry might be more worthwhile at attracting descendants if you got a few more surnames (as in, William's aunts married names in there).
William Sr. had a lot of siblings, so the girls may very well be with family, but blacked out still.

They may have gone to the grandparents first, but it looks like Annie died 1938, and George died 1939.  I got this by searching for a possible marriage of Caroline (William Sr's youngest sister).
That led to her being married to a Peter Carmichael. Looking at them on the 1939 led to the finding of brother George Egglestone living next door (George is on the 1891 census with the rest of them).  And this led to:

Newcastle Evening Chronicle 03 February 1939

Egglestone.--Jarrow, 1, Pitt Street (the resi-
dence of his son-in-law, Peter Carmichael), 1st
inst., George Thomas, dearly beloved husband of
the late Annie Egglestone.  Interment Saturday,
leaving residence 3 p.m.

Anyways, if you can dig up a few more names to add to your tree to attract more people, and hopefully also find trees for the married names, it might give you people to contact.

Edit: William Sr's sister Emley (Emily) appears to have married Mathew O'Neill . (GRO confirms the mmn for their children showing on the 1939)

2nd Edit: William Sr's sister Annie married Charles McCrudden, per George's military records. George and brother Harry were both in the Durham Light Infantry.  There are records for a James Adamson of Chester Le Street for the Durham Light Infantry, although I think they are all in different battalions.... just looking for some link between the families!
