Thomas Corner married Philadelphia Pegg 1872

In 1881, there's a Thomas Corner boarding in Gainsborough with the Scott family. He's a blacksmith, married, b Hose, Leicestershire, and aged 33. I wonder if this is Thomas. In the same household is Thomas Hy Corner age 6, b Marston, Lincs; listed as "son" but name directly below the older Thomasso I think it means his son rather than the son of the HoH. Philadelphia isn't there.

There is an Ancestry tree for this Thomas which is backed up by censuses etc. This shows him as spending some time in Canada, with a different wife, Annie, and an emigration date of 1881 or 1891 according to the Canadian censuses. (It also shows Philadelphia as his first wife). This Thomas then returned to England with Annie and was in Hickling in the 1911 census, eventually dying in Leicestershire in 1930.

Apologies - got my years wrong. It's 1891 & 1901. There is a death in Paddington 1928 as Philadelphia  Brooker though - age 75

I think she was 2 surnames

1901 marriage - Frank Milborow (1891 - Frank Brooker)

I was just coming to that conclusion. Thomas Brooker b c1876 in Marston is Thomas Henry Corner, isn't he?  The fact he calls his son Frank might be telling

I saw her, but she's still Mrs Brooker in 1911 and dies as Brooker, which doesn't fit a 1901 remarriage

Philadelphia Corner m Frank Milborrow; Frank died in 1907. But it looks as though P used Brooker as her surname as welL:

I think so, and I think that P Brooker was indeed the right woman, before and after her marriage to Frank.

So if Thomas went off to Canada and presumably severed contact with Philadelphia, she could have had him declared or presumed dead, and could then legally be considered a widow and free to remarry ---

(or she could have presumed the same without the cost of legal fees!)
