Thomas Astley birth registration missing?
« on: Thursday 15 April 21 08:45 BST (UK) »
Thomas and Mary Astley had 3 children baptised in Lapworth, Warwickshire: Joseph (1834), Eleanor (1836) and Thomas (1842). I can find no birth registration for Thomas, which is frustrating because the mother’s maiden name/parent’s marriage is unknown to me.

The ages of the children in the censuses agree with the baptism (1841 census of Lapworth, the surname is recorded as “Hasley”; 1851 census in Nuthurst -family name now changed to Chesshire).

I see that at the time of the 1841 census Thomas Astley was a “boatman”, so I suppose Thomas might have been born on a boat away from Lapworth, though Lapworth is his birthplace given in censuses.

Any suggestions?

The 1841 Census was taken 6 Jun 1841 - Thomas not listed.
A Thomas Astley was baptised Lapworth, 20 Feb 1842, parents Thomas (a labourer) and Mary.

The Civil births registration period covered is Jun Qtr 1841 - Mar Qtr 1842. Have you checked the number of Thomas Astley births that fall in this period - and where?

You will also have to take into consideration that until 1875 registration of births was NOT the responsibility of the parents, in which case Thomas may very well have fallen through the net.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Lapworth is situated within the Solihull Registration District - there are no entries for Thomas Astley from September quarter 1837 until December quarter 1842.

Thanks for your answers. I think I’ll just have to conclude that this birth registration was just missed, possibly because the family was moving up and down the canal at the time. Just another mystery to add to these rather puzzling people.

I know Mary was born about 1803, in Beoley, which is just outside Redditch, and is about 5 miles west of Lapworth. So it would be a case of checking any Mary's baptised in the parish c1798-1810. It is a start at least.

Having just looked, there is quite a few Mary's baptised in Beoley 1798-1808.

Mary Davis baptised 19 June 1802, parents John and Sarah
Mary Snipe baptised 13 May 1804, parents John and Mary
Mary Richards baptised 1804, parents John and Frances
Mary Barnbrook baptised 10 July 1803, parents Joseph and Esther
Mary Williams baptised 6 Feb 1803, parents John and Ann.
Mary Bates, baptised 15 January 1804, parents John and Mary
Mary Millington, 1802, parents Henry and Mary.
Mary Williams, 1800, parents Thomas and Mary
Mary Gardner, 1800, parents William and Mary.
Mary Ann Commander, 1801, parents Thomas and Ann.
Mary Anne Baker, 9 May 1802, parents Henry and Martha.
Mary Anne Haycock, 1806, parents John and Alice.
Mary Hunt, 1807, parents Geo and Rebecca
Mary Hanker Mander, 1807, mother Sarah.

So loads to choose from.

Mary Chesshire dies in 1874 in Lapworth, aged 69 so born c1805. Must be the Mary wife of Thomas Astley/Chesshire.

Yes, as said, until 1875, many birth went unregistered. I have 2 ancestors in the 1850s whose births were never registered.
