Big House, Kildonan
« on: Friday 16 April 21 12:04 BST (UK) »
I have Gavin Fowlie as grieve at 'Big House', Kildonan, at the time of his marriage in 1856. I see that Kildonan House had not been built at this time, does anyone know anything about which establishment this might have been, and who owned it, i.e. was Gavin's employer?
Also, later in his career when working on Lewis Gavin took part in clearance activities as the landlord's agent. I wondered whether this would have formed part of a grieve's work when he was at Kildonan?
Any thoughts welcomed!

Haven't found anything specific yet, but found this list of Sutherland Estate papers held in the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh. Will keep looking!

The only Bighouse I can think of in the area is this one:

Thank you Manukarik! That certainly looks a likely candidate for my 'Bighouse'. I note also that it is connected with the Clan McKay. Gavin Fowlie married Christina McKay, who came from Dornoch, however, which looks to be a long way away ...
(You will have guessed no doubt that I am not a Scot!)

Due to the clan, you'll find that most people in Sutherland are called Mackay!  I seem to remember people being differentiated by their job, for example. Eg Donnie the Post.

Not sure how much of this you will be able to view, but these papers pertain to the Mackays of Bighouse.

Once you click on a link you'll have to search again with a keyword, eg Bighouse.
