Scottish History: the Power of the Past
« on: Friday 16 April 21 18:36 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have a copy of 'Scottish History: The Power of the Past' by Finlay. There's a section quoted in a chapter called 'What's in a Name:? Pedigree and Propaganda in 17th C Scotland' by D. Allen. I think it was published in  about 2001.

I gave my copy away, but need to know on what page a certain quote is on. It reads something along the lines of:
'Shameless people embellished their pedigrees, and many fabricated their histories to claim ancient credentials'.

A scan of the page would be great, but I'd be pleased with the page number.

Thanks Annie.
So it's in chapter 7, which is helpful.

If you live in Scotland you can register as a reader with the National Library of Scotland and get access to a vast amount of information in electronic format including UPSO which includes this book.

It's on Page 162.

The actual sentence reads "Given the shamelessness with which even copper-bottomed aristocrats embellished their own genealogies (was the earl of Argyll not a descendant of King Arthur himself?), it should be no surprise that brazen arrivistes and nouveaux riches proved adept at fabricating for themselves impressively antique credentials".

Author is David Allan BTW.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Many thanks.
Yes, it's a more detailed quote than I remember.
