Diary - Friday 16th April
« on: Friday 16 April 21 23:17 BST (UK) »
I thought I’d get in first as Roobarb always does the honours!

It’s hard to believe that we’re halfway through yet another month... I know time flies when you’re having fun.... but that’s not exactly what we’re all having...
My mother always said the time goes faster the older you get.... well I can identify with that sentiment!

I woke early... result of going to sleep early.... read for a while...
After breakfast we deliberated about going out to a Nursery we know that sells to nurseries ... we wanted a Victoria Plum tree, a white climbing rose and a climbing hydrangea that has white flowers.... well they didn’t have any so tried few other places around... you don’t want to go to them unnecessarily now do you...
We found a local one that had two out of the three items...
Mid morning by now so off we set... popped into one nursery whose door we were passing... only a green gage tree...
Finally got to the intended place... one plum tree not particularly good one so didn’t bother.... no roses but a beautiful hydrangea in excellent condition ... decided we’d go back to get the green gage...
Lunch when we got home then OH had to pick up his prescription along with five others for friends... proper shipping order!
Whilst he was out I watered both plants... brushed the patio and did some weeding...
Once he returned we had a cuppa first then planted the hydrangea next to the fence( bin clatterers side) should do well there...
Then planted the tree up the top part of the garden where we already have a cooking apple tree... we’ve a beech hedge that runs across the garden about two thirds up and behind are the vegs plots the sheds and apple tree... ideal spot... plum tree to follow in the autumn...
Time to prepare dinner... cooked gammon with mushroom, leek and cider sauce, green vegs...
Watched gardeners world and a river cruise programme narrated by Bill Nyhey...
Tired so retired to bed...

Hope everyone’s safe... these new variants appearing is concerning..... lots more folk had second jabs now... hope people going to be sensible!

How lovely Caroline.
It is so relaxing wandering around garden centres.
I bet your garden is a picture.
We made a tiny garden with a pond in Dorchester, from scratch.
Got some marvellous advice from the WI enthusiasts, and attracted all sorts of wild life there, but when we moved away the new owners covered the entire space with a conservatory, so I guess the hedgehogs had to move elsewhere.  :'(

Yesterday before lunch we visited SiL who had reached the first anniversary hurdle without her husband, and after lunch took a long walk in the sunshine to a small handyman shop for some wood glue as a chair has broken again. The repair has held for several years, but needs further attention now.
Walking back through the park I realised there were tiny ducklings on the leat which carries water from Well Street in the old town, back to the sea. A total delight to see 13 little fluff balls busy pecking away. But life will be hard for them; as we stood there a very small child found a stone and lobbed it at them, while mother made no reaction at all, so if they survive the seagulls they will have to learn to dodge stones.

The virus variants are a concern, but I don't think I can do more than I am doing.

Caroline, your hydrangea will be lovely as it grows up the fence and greengages to look forward to, hope they thrive. Maybe you'll be able to find a rose later.

What a shame about your previous garden MH, hope the hedgehogs found a nice new home. Lovely to see the ducklings but it amazes me how some people let the children get away with such cruelty. I'm sure your sil will have appreciated your visit.

My day:

Woke early, that saved me from the experience of being woken by the alarm. Plenty of time to prepare for art class. Several people had sent their apologies, unfortunately not the one who doesn't mute herself before banging about and the one who always has to have her two pennorth in. I got cold just sitting around despite the central heating having been on. The demo was about doing a portrait in acrylics, something which I'd normally be pleased to have a go at. However, we need to take a photo of an adult we know, a pose halfway between full face and profile, no cheesy grins. All very well for most of the class who have partners and/or grown up children to photograph but a problem for me. What a time to pick.

Had some lunch and went for a walk, it was breezy and colder than expected. Didn't see anyone in the woods, just a couple of dog walkers on the field. I guess they all found other things to do now that restrictions have been lifted.

Picked up my reading glasses to have a look at something, couldn't understand why my vision had gone funny. Then I realised that not only had a screw come out but the whole lens had fallen out and was still in the case. Had to dig out an old pair to use. I need some new glasses anyway but wasn't planning on getting them yet. As far as I know the opticians are working as normal, just another thing I need to pluck up courage to use.

Spent the rest of the afternoon in the same way as others recently, gardening and sitting reading in the sun where it's sheltered. Moved some irises to a sunny spot, the position they were in was anything but. The trouble is that most plants like the sunshine but I can't put everything at one side of the garden. It was very quiet until NN banged her bins down the side of the house and although I have a blocked ear which is driving me mad I was deafened by the noise, done deliberatey I think.

My friend A phoned later, we had a very long chat. Didn't get round to watching Doc Martin.

Oh dear! People can be very thoughtless can't they Roobarb?
Perhaps you could take a selfie on your phone?
You don't have to submit it if you don't wish to, but it might be interesting to utilise the points raised in the demo?
I have had my specs frames fall to pieces before, and I am certain any optician will fix it for you. The charge probably no more than a small donation in the charity box.
Lovely to have a long chat with your friend, and now you have Doc Martin to catch up on, that is something to look forward to.  :D

We had a quick first foray to the shops mid afternoon- well to a large Marks and Spencer with parking outside. Husband needed some essentials including new slippers , as the supermarket ones we bought in lockdown didn’t even make it to the end of lockdown. It was very civilised, not very busy and felt safe. Husband doesn’t enjoy wearing a mask but he managed and it was lovely to do something different and to get out of the house for a while. Plus he has some decent slippers now and other essentials.

MH, my art teacher is normally the kindest and most thoughtful person you could meet, she probably doesn't realise that there are people like me who are not in a bubble with anyone. We did self portraits once before in a different medium and to be honest I avoid selfies like the plague! I'm going to see if my friend J will let me use her as a subject, if so I'll take some photos on our weekly walk. Otherwise I'll just have to use a photo from the internet and tell my teacher why. If the pics of my ancestors were in colour I'd use one of them!

Well done Candleflame on braving the shops, I'm pleased to hear it was a quiet and safe experience for you.

Why not do a sepia portrait? It'd be different, and subtle.

What about one of your nice neighbours next door?  Sure they'd happy to oblige.

TF, although I'd very much like to do that, one of the aims of the project is to get the colours right. But thanks for the suggestion.  :)

Annette, yes they might be. Two of the girls are officially adults but at their age they might expect it to be something glamorous and I'm sure it won't turn out that way! In fact it's highly unlikely to look like the subject but it's good to know how to go about it. You'd think I'd be an expert considering how many series of Portrait Artist of the Year I've watched!

I'll see whether my friend is up for it and go from there. Thanks for the suggestions.  :)
