Forenames
« on: Saturday 17 April 21 14:09 BST (UK) »
I have Marie Younger who married John Deans in 1734 at Fogo.
I can`t find a definite baptism for her although there is a Margaret, father Alexander, at Fogo in 1708.

The next group of baptisms including my 5xgt grandfather David only have the father`s name John. I was hoping that at least one of them would have the mother`s name.

I`ve never heard that Marie is short for Margaret, but hoping someone has !!

Thank you.

I`m losing the plot a bit ! I`ve a feeling I`ve asked this before and you kindly gave me that information. Just going to check the line, again !!

The only children I`ve found from this marriage are William, Isobell and David (my ancestor). Going by the naming pattern, I was thinking that if Patrick Younger was Marie`s father Patrick would appear as one of her children.

John and Marie married in June  1734, William born 23rd March 1735 !!

No, sorry.

I have seen confusion between Mary and Marg as an abbreviation for Margaret, but given the history and religious connotations of Mary/Marie I can't imagine anyone confusing that name with Margaret.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
