Anglo African Club - Vancouver
« on: Saturday 17 April 21 17:36 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I am trying to trace the second husband of my gg grandmother. His name was James Cameron and I know he was in Vancouver B.C between 1909 - 1911, he was then in Honolulu until 1913 and moved to Victoria B.C October time 1913. There is a listing on a directory in 1910/11 for James Cameron as the manager of the Anglo African Club - his home address was 649 Howe. I am not sure if this is the husband as there is a possible three James Camerons in the area, but does anybody know what the Anglo African Club was? I have googled it and found nothing, apart for something similar in South Africa, which is where my gg grandmother and her James Cameron were prior to 1909. Any help would be great. Thanks!

MJ

MJ see if he is here:

and here

https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1921/Pages/search.aspx

To me an Anglo-African Club suggests a social club for those from South Africa. There were and are a lot with origins from there who lived in Vancouver and Victoria.  649 Howe St was in the heart of Vancouver (business area).

I have turned off all email notifications, thank you.

Thanks Don,

I will have a look at those sites. The trouble is, the James Cameron I am looking for leaves Vancouver in 1911 with my gg grandmother and he becomes a barber in Honolulu. They return to Victoria BC in 1913. She then leaves in 1914 for San Francisco without him, and in 1919 she files for divorce on grounds of desertion. The James Cameron at the Afro Anglican Club disappears off of the directories from 1912 which makes me think he could be the one as he is now living in Honolulu. There is one other that disappears at the same time from the directories and that is James Cameron a Barman at the Melbourne Hotel, Vancouver.

I will keep digging, but if the Anglo African club has links with South Africa, then that would make more sense.

Hi

The 1910 and 1911 directories put the Club at 432 Richards St., less than a ten minute walk for the Cameron's on Howe St.

432 Richards is the address of the Canada Permanent Building, which was built around 1912, so the Club may have been in a house/building that got knocked down?

Thanks bbart. I have just found articles about it on Newspapers.com and it looks like the club only existed for a couple of years. Then for 649 Howe there is advert looking for a business partner in a barber business. My James Cameron becomes a barber in Honolulu before moving back to B.C and vanishing completely and Florence Cameron sues him for desertion. Thanks for your help, that's helped me find where he was prior to Honolulu. Now, I just need to figure out where he was in Victoria B.C from 1913/14 onwards.

Thanks!
