Births and Adoptions 1921
« on: Monday 19 April 21 12:15 BST (UK) »
So a little while back I asked for your help about locating my wifes biological grandparents and subsequently we located her father. So, thanks to those that helped.

But now my next question.

Based on my wife and her fathers DNA results, we have documented that her father is not biologically related to his cousins on his own fathers side of the family.  Based on their DNA results, I have matched them to a number of other DNA matches and have identified who I think is the parents of my wife's grandfather. It is compelling because not only do we have some close DNa matches, the 2 people in question were neighbours.  The father was a young widow and the mother was a 21 year old neighbour. The grandfather lived his life with a middle name that matched his anticipated mothers surname!

So, I have now obtained the Birth Certificate for my wife's grandfather.  The record lists his first name and then (Deceased). I assume that is because he is now subsequently deceased?

There is room for a different name at birth and also for any name changes but they are blank.  The parents names match the "adopted" parents and not the "biological" candidates.  There was no other details listed for the "adopted" parents, like ages, maiden names etc.

The address was listed as 18 Kensington Street, Wellington, which I understand was a Bethany Maternity Hospital for unwed mothers.

Does it make sense that he was born and then adopted through the Bethany Hospital?

I thought there would be a birth record for his Biological birth and then adopted birth too?

Is there going to be any other records kept for this adoption/birth?

Thoughts?

Hello Gary.

For staters did you order a NZ historic CERTIFICATE of BIRTH, or did you order a PRINT OUT of the birth registration?

Hi Garry,

Would you like to PM the name(s) to me?

Only the birth details for the adoption will show on line, i.e adopted name and those of the adoptive parents. However I am happy to do a search for you.

[As an aside, apart from it being cheaper, it is usually preferable to obtain a printout as it may contain more information than a certificate. Can also be e-mailed. However in this instance there were possibly no additional details.]

Hi Garry

It is possible to get a pre adoption birth certificate.  You need extra documents to get these

If you ring BMD   they will email you all the details.

Hope this helps. I have got a pre adoption birth cert for an adopted person.

Thanks.

I emailed them a few weeks ago, just after his “100th birthday “, but got no reply.

I contacted the Salvation Army with all the suspected information last night. They responded back today and essentially confirmed what I suspect, but they now require some documentation so they can send me a copy of the file.
