Minnie, just wondering if it is worth attaching this thread as a link to the 2017 thread?

Afterall, it is concerning Jarvey, and if anyone comes across it, they know someone else is searching from NZ.

Cheers

Spades,

just an observation...he may have been a deadly person, but a handsome man, and even in death (as per the death mask)...almost smiling.

Must have been a charmer.

What a life!

Here are some negatives to add to the NZ chapter of the JARVEY-SHAW s

There are no Jarvey sons attending secondary School in Dunedin and none of the Shaw s listed in OBHS Centennial Register match either.

Elizabeth having gone into service in the country could have married using her mothers name but none of these Presbyterian marriages seem right.   (Presbyterian Churches in country districts were sometimes used as other denominations were not as accessible)

SHAW Elizabeth Ellen 27y    CATTO James 39y    14 Aug 1879      19/24/1      North Taieri
SHAW Elizabeth Annie 28y    NASHAM George 30y    5 Jun 1905    19/16/08  Port Chalmers
SHAW Elizabeth full age HAY James full age    27-Dec    1881    22/20/2   St Pauls Invercargill

Jarvey is not very common and only one appears (and only as a middle name) in Otago Presbyterian marriages

ROSS Mary Jane aged   22 married BARCLAY William Jarvey aged 29 on 15 Jan 1895    in Duntroon  (ref 1/044    North Otago Museum)

Thanks for your input Signal. I too, had looked at possible Shaw marriages for Elizabeth Ann (and Eliza) and managed to eliminate all of them. Jarvey as you say, is not common in this country.

Returning to the link at Reply # 32- [see reply #10]

Again the name of 'England' appears. But in a different Jarvey family?

Just a thought, but ... has JARVEY been mis-transcribed as HARVEY ... some of the NSW handwriting by registrars (or their deputies, or the clergy  :-X) can be little more than scribble, and for much of the 19th century, the capital J was wholly formed above the line by many NSW registrars.  Likely other jurisdictions had scribbling registrars as well.

A good find JM, thank you.

Yes very sad; a great many infant deaths back then. And having to endure so many births during their child bearing years must have been very tough on the poor mothers.
