Hello,

I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who rose to the challenge and contributed to this interesting topic. I think it has probably gone as far as it can; enough information having been gathered to bring it to an end.

Again, thank you.   :)

Minnie,

Thank you for bringing this interesting topic to our attention! :D  I think we have all had our eyes opened to what went on in this family.  No-one actually knows what goes on behind closed doors, but in this case we did. :)

Cheers

I felt it was a topic Rootschatters would like to get their collective teeth into and even if not contributing, would find the matter interesting to read. As no doubt our ancestors would have done!
Even today it comes across as a shocking story.

Hi All, First of all, you've done an amazing job of tracking down Elizabeth. I've been working on that for over a year now, and you did so much better than me!  I'm working on a novel about Lizzie, and the information here will be so incredibly useful.

As a kind of return favour, I wanted to let you know that the CLARA you found was indeed, Katie. I sent off for her marriage and death certificates, and the marriage cert confirms that her parents were indeed William and Catherine Jarvey.

I found an article but stupidly didn't bookmark it a while ago that referenced MARGARET LITTLE being on the goldfields, drunk, threatening some rather bemused men with a gun. At the time she was going on about how Jarvey had died for her. I think, in light of that, and the suicide attempt alluded to in an earlier article quoted here, that it's unlikely that Margaret raised the children. And the abject poverty of the time would have made that a difficult task. I think it more likely that The younger children ended up in the Benevolent Institute, which was not far from where the murder occurred. I have no documentation for that, however. It is just my gut feeling.

Thanks again. I am actually quite relieved that Lizzie did well and also, that she seems to have remained single (at least for her youth). Marriage must have been acutely unattractive as a proposition after all she went through.
From the tree
John Sydney FRANCE born London 1853 to John France and Sarah Woodroof. Death not known

I'm cautious about Clara being Katie, as there's a Jarvey family that emigrated to Australia in 1883, with a Clara born Jersey 1864. This is the same family with an older 'England Jarvey' that I posted here.

I'm glad you've posted this as I've been meaning to post what I found a while ago. This may be her, as she seems to disappear from the Tasmanian records.

From the Australian electoral rolls:

Elizabeth Jarvey, 61 Riversdale rd, Hawthorn (home duties), in the electoral rolls for Victoria, Kooyong, Glenferrie for the years 1903, 1909, 1914 and 1915

This is also the address for Thomas Probin Von Mylius (manufacturer) and Ada Blanch Von Mylius (home duties), so she may be a housekeeper or similar?

England as a surname may lead to more information. Several families with that name can be found, for example, in the Channel Islands, where the name also appears as a Christian name.
