Peter and Donald Fowlie -- no trace of birth?
« on: Tuesday 20 April 21 11:54 BST (UK) »
I have been combing Scotland's People for a while now and can't find anything in the statutory or baptismal records for these two boys, children of Gavin and Christina Fowlie and according to the 1871 census born in 1865 and 1866 in Stornaway. Am I just being dumb (feel free to confirm this but only if you can do better!!) Help would be much appreciated.

Hi Cathy! Yes, that's my boy(s) but why can't I find them in the statutory records?! All their siblings came up absolutely fine. I am being slightly obsessional about this because I wanted to check their father Gavin's job description at the time of their births. Thank you so much for your swift reply. I should have thought of Family Search, it often has stuff one can't find elsewhere (even if not Gavin's job description, mutter mutter ...)

Hi William, thank you so much. I did try 'Foulie' before without success but never mind, I've now got them!

Hi queencorgi1

There is quite a lot of detail on Peter Fowlie online. Do you have details on him already? Don't want to repeat!

In respect of Gavin Fowlie, he showed as a Farm Grieve in 1861 at Kirkton, Reay. In 1871, he is down as Farm Manager at Manos Farm, Stornoway. At the time of his death in 1900, he is a farmer living at  Laxdale Cottage, Stornoway. He died intestate in Inverness on 17 Jan 1900.

Hi Monica, some of that I suspect will have come from me! Anything referring to his son James or the Hockey Team project is definitely me.

I would be particularly interested in anything new about his time in Singapore, his family life (wife Mary Laurence, daughter of the provost of Forres), or his last years in retirement. Photographs would be incredibly welcome. As he occupied such an important role in Singapore I feel sure there must be some official shots surviving somewhere.

Thank you for taking an interest! Peter was clearly an interesting man although I suspect a bad man to cross.
