Who were the three founders of Gabbitas, Truman & Thring?
« on: Wednesday 21 April 21 17:12 BST (UK) »

Gabbitas, Truman & Thring.
This educational agency seems to have, in the past, focused upon trying to find tutors for the less academic children of international Royalty and power brokers.  Nowadays aiming at the Russian expatriates living in UK.

Did an online search and the agency is said to have been formed 150 years ago. - checked newspapers.

The name has changed over the years but one of the originals seems to have been a John GABBITAS. Expect he can be looked up in the censuses.

1878 the agency was “ASKIN and GABBITAS”

Broad Arrow 10 Feb 1877
Woolwich, Sandhurst, Cooper’s Hill Etc - Messrs. ASKIN and GABBITAS send (gratis) on application, prospectuses and reliable information of tutors who have been successful in passing pupils from all the competitive examinations. - Address, No. 9A, Sackville Street, W. Reference kindly allowed to the Chaplain General to the Forces and others.

Hampshire Advertiser 12 Oct 1878 - Marriages
On the 10th instant, at the parish church, Clapham, by the Rev. J. B. BOWYER, John GABBITAS, of Sackville Street, Piccadilly, London, to Ada Mary, only daughter of the late Alfred WOOD, of Southampton.

many thans for those sources.  I was not getting very far.

The marriage to Ada Mary WOOD will help anchor the correct John.

The FreeBMD marriage below seems to have an error which I will try to sort out and submit a correction.

It's not an error. Ada and John divorced in 1886 and this is her remarriage. As a divorced woman both her maiden and previous married surnames are shown

MABEL,
many thanks for your instant explanation!  I have never come across this before and I suspect it would have stumped me.

Askin, Gabbitas and Thring advertising from at least 1890. Later as Gabbitas and Thring.

Advertising in same timescale, was a "MR. S. A. TRUMAN (who has had large experiene of educational agency work)"  so perhaps the same Truman who eventually joined up with Gabbitas and Thring. He was possibly the same Truman of "TRUMAN and KNIGHTLEY. Educational Agents".

Still advertising in 1950s, "TRUMAN KNIGHTLEY LTD., Educational Consultants. Founded 1901.".

Gabbitas and Thring still advertised together in 1960s, as was Truman and Knightley.

Not seeing 1970 entries.

By 1980s, advertising under Gabbitas, Truman and Thring.
