Looking for a possible marriage, California, 1920-1930
« on: Thursday 22 April 21 05:04 BST (UK) »
Stab in the dark ....

I am looking for any evidence that David M. Dundas [born 12 June 1896 in Ontario, Canada] married Dorothea Minerva Childs [born 5 May 1898 in Marquette County, Wisconsin].  This marriage, if it occurred, would have taken place in or around Los Angeles/Long Beach, California between 1920 and 1930.

I looked at the 1921 to 1933 City Directories.
1921 and 1922 no David or Gustavus Dundas. (I assume Gustavus is his father)
1923 - Gustavus Dundas at 1210 Esperanza. no David.
1924 and 1925 David and G. at the same address - 1210 Hoffman in 1924, 4226 E 4th in 1925.
1926 and 1927 G. but no David at 4314 E 4th
1928 David and G at 4205 Vermont
1929 David at 3749 Elm. G at 2725 E Broadway
1930 David not listed, but census has him single, boarding at 17343 East Seventh. I started here and wasn't looking for Gustavus yet.
1931. G at 244a Prospect. no David
1932. neither one.
1933. both at 244a Prospect.

----
So he is in and out of his parents' house. If he did marry Dorothea Childs, (maybe about 1925/26) it didn't last long.

--------
and he married Ada Keller in Los Angeles County 8 Sep 1937 and is with her in Fresno CA in 1940. Both said they lived in Long Beach in 1935.

Thanks for looking.  Dorothea also was later married to someone else.  The reason I think that she and David Dundas might have been briefly married is that my grandmother [Dorothea's aunt], writing in 1944, said that Dorothea had married someone named D.M. Dundas.  My grandmother's information has proved to be accurate so I tend to trust it.   David Dundas has the right initials, he was the appropriate age, and he was in the right place at the right time.  He is the logical suspect but I have never been able to pin it down.

Is this her in the 1930 census with middle name first?  States she is divorced and is in Monterey.

I've seen that record but I don't know if it's her.  I have it stashed as a possible.  The horribly screwed up name and the profession of "author, literature" give me pause.  Maybe it's a pen name.  I have no other information to suggest that she was an author.  She did eventually die in Monterey, California in 1959.

She said she was a typist in 1924. at 143 S Figueroa, Los Angeles
her father? Elias was at 5913 1/2 Pasadena

that is the only place I have found her so far in the directories.

When did she marry next? And did she ever go by "Dorothy"? I'd like to rule out one or two Dorothy M Dundas in various California city directories - 1936 Glendale,1939 El Centro, 1939 Glendale

Thank you, that rules out the Dorothy Dundas I am seeing.
