You're welcome!  I think some of those links to the Monterey papers may be duds, as they're now asking me to log in.  The link to search the papers is here - https://www.monterey.org/library/History-Room/Historical-Newspapers - so that may work better.

I've always said that all the best stories in my tree are in the Logan branch and Myrto confirms it yet again.

Tomorrow I'll set about trying to work out the timeline which is a bit confusing because, by my reckoning, she was in New York in 1940 married to a customs agent.

Thank you, Genealiza, I guess I do want to know about Mr. Dundas.  I haven't started worrying about him yet.  I'm trying to work through the stuff on Dorothea who has suddenly morphed from a boring stenographer into a Bohemian literary figure.  When I made my initial post, I had no idea what I was getting into.  Thanks for bringing up that 1930 census.  I had actually saved it years ago in my 'who-the-hell-knows-but-it's-worth-saving' file and then forgotten all about it.

His name was Dagfin Dundas (changed to Dan), b. 15 Mar 1899 in Chistiana (now Oslo), Norway to Harold and Signe Dietrick Dundas.  He travelled to the US in 1922 aboard the Antonio, landing in Quebec, CAN.  From there, he took the Great Northern Railway west and crossed into the US at Blaine, WA.  He applied for citizenship in Seattle and then again in San Francisco (1930)

There are various trips to Norway and the naturalization of his wife, Berne, whom he married in 1948.
