Sütterlin script
« on: Thursday 22 April 21 16:39 BST (UK) »
Hi Guys,  I have been sent another 8 pages from Dad's diary. While most of it is in Normalschrift style, which I can just about read and translate, he suddenly changes to Sütterlin for  8 lines. Please help me once again.

I know you like challenges,  Thanks,  Dave.

Hi Dave,

Hopefully davecapps will be along soon to provide a better version, as I can't read everything.

But here is the rough gist of things:

Zahlen, hat Zorn auf mich nennt
mich Kommunist.
19.1.1937 – fängt mein Bruder auch bei uns als Hilfsarbeiter an.
bekommt 20.9 Lohn.

gehe von der Gewerkschaft auf ei-
nen Bildungskurs auf 2 Wochen.
gehe mit Karl zum (Hochlenne?) auf
einen Ball bis ½ 3 h. (?) (Schaffner?)
kamen ist aber leider 22 Jahre alt.
2. Mai Sonntag. gehe mit den

The translation is a bit tricky, as bits are missing before and after, and it is not clear as to whether some things have happened or will happen. He has a habit of starting a sentence with "gehe" in lower-case letters. (Gehe from gehen, to go/walk.) At least as far as the ball goes, it really should be ging/went. That confuses me a bit.  ???

Here we go:

(numbers, could also be to pay), is angry with me, calls me a communist.
19.1.1937 - my brother also starts working for us as a labourer.
Receives 20.9 wages.

The trade union is sending me on an educational course for 2 weeks.
Going with Karl to (Hochlenne?) to a ball until ½ 3 h. (?) (Schaffner?) came but unfortunately is 22 years old.
2 May Sunday. going with the

1/2 3 h = halb drei = 02:30 (i.e. he stayed out late  ;D)

Best regards,
Karen

Gunther Schaffner.

I couldn't see anything at all in that word earlier. Thanks for that!

Now I'm wondering if it might be Gerta?
Good, we don't know why he sounded disappointed about the person's age or indeed what his interests were  ;) but a female name might be more likely.

Hi Karen & Maid,
Thanks for trying to work out the diary.  Karl, is dads brother. They were 18 and 25 at the time. I do not recognise the name Gunther Schaffner, (or possibly Gerta?),  so i cant help you there, maybe a workmate or friend. As for the age of 22 - it can not be that he was too young, or too old.

It seems dad refers to 'Trade Union' and 'Apprenticeship' rather a lot. In Austria (or Europe), did they do various organised holidays, groups, etc. for workers.

Intriguing, thanks,  Dave.

Hi
here´s my 2 cents.

Zahlen, hat Zorn auf mich nennt
mich Kommunist.
19.1.1937 – fängt mein Bruder auch bei uns als Hilfsarbeiter an.
bekommt 20.S(hilling) Lohn.

gehe von der Gewerkschaft auf ei-
nen Bildungskurs auf 2 Wochen.
gehe mit Karl zum Stahlener auf
einen Ball bis ½ 3 h. Grete Schaffer
kamen ist aber leider 22 Jahre alt.
2. Mai Sonntag. gehe mit den

Maybe it wasn´t the "done thing" at that time, to have an older girlfreind.
So Grete would have been to old for the 18 year old

Hi DaveC,

Thanks for your transcription. I think Karen will be pleased she did a good job of reading it ... It was a vast improvement of the nonsense that I thought the individual letters spelt, lol.

I didnt think of the 4 year older age difference as a possibility of Karens translation. We (I) dont always think of how life's ideas and views have changed over time.

Thanks again DaveC, Karen and Maid.

Dave.

Well done (as always), davecapps!

I can see Stahlener now. The money (Lohn) also makes more sense - I can see that what I thought was a "9" is different to the other 9s in the text.

@ dave1948: Yes, I was quite pleased.  ;D

I think the 4-year age difference would play a huge role. This way round, at any rate. If the man were 22 and the woman 18, it wouldn't be such a big thing. In fact, it would be nothing out of the ordninary.  8) But a younger boyfriend, at that age? Nooo way!  ;D
