Elder of Derry
« on: Friday 23 April 21 04:14 BST (UK) »
Hiya,

I was hoping someone might be able to help find some information on an ancestor called Robert Elder. He was born about 1859 in Derry, in 1881 aged 22 he’s in Glasgow with his brother had new Wife (James and Annie McKiver), James appears to have went back to Ireland and settled in the Belfast area and died 1924 , but Robert stayed on and got married in 1887 to Elizabeth McAffer, both stated to be 25 years old and then he vanishes, his parents were John Elder dead by 1878 and Mary Kane, supposedly died in 1893 in Ireland but no idea where. Robert and James’s sister Mary is my 3rd great grandmother and she was married in Coleraine in 1864 to Henry Kennedy and then came over to Scotland in the mid 1870s. I always assumed Mary came over without other family but found out earlier about the two brothers which means maybe more came over, who knows, but would like to find out what happened to Robert

If you are trying to trace Robert Elder (your relative not ancestor) then surely you should be looking in Scotland at Scottish records?
There’s a possible death for Robert’s wife Elizabeth which you can check (died very soon after marriage?) to see if Robert is her husband and the informant.
Henry Kennedy and wife Mary Elder went to Govan, Scotland between 1867-1869. Mary Kennedy born c1844 so I suspect her mother Mary Elder was slightly older than indicated on death certificate.
I can see only 2 death in Coleraine registration district for a John Elder (one a child & other death in 1920)- it’s likely that John either died before 1864 in Coleraine area, elsewhere in Ireland or perhaps in Scotland.

Added- can see no death or marriage for Robert Elder in Ireland from 1887-1921.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

If you have the copy of the marriage of Robert Elder and Elizabeth you will have her mothers name you can check against the name mentioned ( Knowles )
If it is her then there is a possibility Robert Elder went to Philadelphia what was his occupation 1887?
Like aghadowey I could not see a marriage or a death in Ireland but a possibility in Philadelphia 1889

Yeah Elizabeth died only a month after their wedding in November 1887, Robert is a boilermaker journeyman and the informant was her sister. Roberts brother was also a boilermaker and and Robert was working in he shipyards in 1881
